In May 2017, Symphonic Brass Wales were invited to perform at the prestigious Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, Russia. One of the most important Russian national holidays, the Victory Day celebrations are held across Russia each year on May 9th.
SBW visited the Russian capital from the 7th to 14th of May, participating in the celebrations by marching in "The Immortal Regiment" Parade and giving a series of concerts in the city's parks and concert halls. Alongside fellow performing groups from Italy, New Zealand & Scotland, SBW were among the first foreign groups invited to participate in the parade, which each year sees tens of thousands of descendants of Second World War soldiers march through Moscow's main streets, including the iconic Red Square, bearing photographs of their ancestors.
Footage of the parade can be found in the videos below, while the official website of the Immortal Regiment Parade can be found here while below can be found footage of an ensemble from the band performing the beautiful Rachmaninov "Bogoroditse Devo" inside an Orthodox Church, a highly unusual occurrence and possible first for any instrumental ensemble.
Following our performance at the prestigious Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, Russia in May 2017, Symphonic Brass Wales were subsequently invited to perform in Russia once again from August 13th to 25th 2018, visiting Moscow, Krasnodar and Crimea.
We had an absolutely fantastic time in each of the regions and cities that we visited, and a tremendous welcome from the people in each. A daily blog from our visit can be found on the SBW Facebook Page here while a series of images and our full schedule from the visit can be found here Videos from two of our performances at the ruins of the ancient theatre and panorama at Sevastopol can be found below
